Getting Ready for Summer in San Diego

Friday, March 30th, 2007

No matter what the calendar says, summertime hits San Diego pretty early. You may have to accept some May grey or June gloom, but aside from that the weather gets really nice really early in the year.

Obviously in a place like this, you have a lot of options as the weather warms up. The late spring is a great time to go hiking around San Diego county… not so hot that you feel like you’re going to melt if you’re inland, and all the plants are blooming. It’s the time of year that San Diego has plenty of green. (more…)

Why Do People Choose to Live in San Diego?

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

San Diego is one of the largest cities in the nation. What is it about San Diego that attracts people so?

It certainly isn’t the housing prices. Housing costs are significantly higher in San Diego than in many metropolitan areas. It’s not the most expensive place to live but not for the broke of wallet.

It’s not the traffic, a popular complaint among San Diegans. Once again, traffic in San Diego isn’t as bad as in many other cities but sometimes it’s pretty horrendous. (more…)

Balboa Park

San Diego, CA 92101

The Japanese Friendship Garden is a beautiful Zen garden in Balboa Park. It features a lovely koi pond, bonsai and more.

There is an admission fee, but the garden is well worth it. You can also become a member if this is a place you’d like to visit regularly.

The koi are quite friendly and used to people. On some days guests are allowed to feed the koi, which is sure to delight children as well as adults. (more…)

Mt. Soledad

One of the best views of the ocean in San Diego can be had on Mt. Soledad. It’s just back of La Jolla, and on a clear day the view is a delight.

The ocean view is the first most people look at, of course, but the view in all directions is worthwhile. There are a lot of canyons in the area, so you see more than just city. You can even check out the traffic along the I-5.

On the absolute clearest days you can see to Mexico to the south and to the east you’ll see mountains, which are capped with snow in winter. In between of course, you can see downtown San Diego and much more. (more…)

Old Town

Saturday, September 2nd, 2006

Old Town in San Diego is fun for visitors and locals. There’s fun shopping, great restaurants and a museum. You can also visit a variety of historic buildings and enjoy living history demonstrations.

San Diego was the first permanent settlement by the Spanish in California. Old Town became a State Historic Park in 1968. Some of the buildings that still stand include the Mason Street School, La Casa de Bandini and La Casa de Estudillo.

Old Town is home to more than 100 shops and 24 restaurants. You can get some great Mexican food, of course, as well as other kinds of food. My personal favorite is Rockin’ Baja Lobster. (more…)
