Get to Know La Jolla
La Jolla is a part of the city of San Diego in many ways, yet it is also separate. Mail sent to La Jolla addresses is marked San Diego by some but La Jolla by others without a problem.
La Jolla is Spanish for “The Jewel” and La Jolla is lovely indeed. Its beaches are sandy and beautiful, there are palm trees all around, and you just won’t believe the many high class stores. If you’re an art lover, there are plenty of shops for you. Love clothing and fashion? You’ll find plenty of hot styles. Love food? Picking from the many restaurants will take some effort. The jewelry stores are simply fabulous.
Many of the beaches are sandy, but you can also find marvelous tide pools to delight the children. You’ll find a wonderful variety of sea anemones, crabs and even small fish in the tide pools.
There is one beach called the Children’s Pool, which is a protected, man made beach, but it is now the home of many sea lions. They raise their pups there. The sea lions are protected by Federal law (besides, they are wild animals!), so do not go near them. The water of the Children’s Pool is sometimes open to the public, but due to the sea lions’ use of it, it is really not clean enough for humans to swim in safely. There have been legal battles over what to do about it, but it all really comes down to there being no way to keep the sea lions out.
One thing you can enjoy at Children’s Pool is the breakwater. This concrete structure is what keeps the waters of the Children’s Pool so calm, and the waves crash upon it constantly. Be ready to get wet, especially at high tide!
For a great view, head on up Mt. Soledad. The cross and war memorial up there are worth a look too. The cross is likely to have to come down, as there have been years of legal battles over it, but as of this writing is still there.
La Jolla is one of the loveliest areas of San Diego, and well worth at least a day or two on your trip to San Diego.
