Japanese Friendship Garden
Balboa Park

The Japanese Friendship Garden is a beautiful Zen garden in Balboa Park. It features a lovely koi pond, bonsai and more.
There is an admission fee, but the garden is well worth it. You can also become a member if this is a place you’d like to visit regularly.
The koi are quite friendly and used to people. On some days guests are allowed to feed the koi, which is sure to delight children as well as adults.
There are classes available at different times at the garden. Check the calendar for more information on currently available classes. There can be courses in bonsai, sushi making and much more.
For those looking to get married, there are some beautiful settings for a wedding within the Japanese Friendship Garden, depending on the number of people attending. No room for huge weddings but for more moderate celebrations the space will be adequate and beautiful.
Enjoy the artistic exhibits in the Exhibit House. These change regularly, so I won’t post the current ones. Instead, I suggest that you go to the website to learn about current special exhibits.
The Japanese Friendship Garden is undergoing an expansion as of this writing, as they increase the size of the Tea Pavilion, add an herb and tea garden, put in an amphitheater, more paths, irrigation and more. It will be using the remaining nine acres of the garden that had not previously been in use.
