La Jolla Cove
We took the kids to La Jolla Cove this week. It’s a fun beach to go to, and at this time of year not too crowded. Water here in San Diego doesn’t get as warm as it does some places. The temperature was 67 degrees, but it went well with the day’s air temperature.

The kids had a blast. We went to some of the smaller tide pools in the area; there are larger ones, but these worked well for coping with two small children. There was plenty of sea life to be seen – hermit crabs, sea anemones and a variety of tiny fish and other crabs. The tide wasn’t even at it’s lowest point and we still got a good view.

Now, one of the things about San Diego you need to understand is that May and June are not our most beautiful months. We talk about “May grey” and “June gloom” around here, and the terms are quite appropriate. The sun didn’t really start coming out until mid afternoon. This can be deceptive for those who worry about sun burn, as you don’t always realize how much sun exposure you’re getting. I strongly recommend using sunscreen here even if the day does look cloudy. Trust me, it is very easy to get a burn on a cloudy day.
You have to go down some stairs to reach the beaches at La Jolla Cove; above are some nice grassy areas. If you walk a little further than we did you come to the Children’s Pool, which was once a swimming area for children but now inhabited by seals and sea lions. It’s still a great experience for the kids to see these animals in the wild. Don’t get too close! They will bite and these are large animals. You may also see a variety of sea birds, including pelicans.
Some days the water is clear enough for some good snorkeling. I haven’t done that in a while (hard to do with small children!) but La Jolla Cove was a favorite area of mine for that.
