Mission Beach
San Diego’s Mission Beach is a part of The Strand, a stretch of sandy beach over 2 miles long. It’s one of the most popular beaches in San Diego, and no wonder! Beautiful sand, good surf, and if you want to have a little off-beach fun, Belmont Park is right there.
Mission Beach features a narrow boardwalk, which can become crowded at times with all the people walking, skating and riding bicycles. You can only go 8 miles per hour or less - this is not the place to hurry.
The beach does have lifeguard protection, but it varies by season. You may want to check with lifeguards for exact hours, but normal summer hours are 9 AM to dusk.
Swimming and surfing areas are separated, and you will want to be sure you are in the right zone for your own safety. Just look at what people are doing and look for the checkered flag to see where the activities change.
People have a lot of fun at Mission Beach. You’ll see volleyball games, parties and more. There are fire rings available during the summer, so you can have a bonfire with your friends - a great way to relax in the evenings!
This is not a beach for scuba diving or snorkeling. There just isn’t that much sea life to be seen, the surf is too rough and there are too many other people in the water.
You can go shopping too. There are shops in Belmont Park as well as about a block from the beach on Mission Boulevard.
To get there, take the I-5 to the Grand Avenue exit going west. Follow Grand to Mission Boulevard, turn left and drive until you see the roller coaster. Be careful - lots of pedestrians, crosswalks and stop signs. There’s lots of free parking, but in summer it isn’t nearly enough. Get there early and make the most of your day!
