Old Town
Old Town in San Diego is fun for visitors and locals. There’s fun shopping, great restaurants and a museum. You can also visit a variety of historic buildings and enjoy living history demonstrations.
San Diego was the first permanent settlement by the Spanish in California. Old Town became a State Historic Park in 1968. Some of the buildings that still stand include the Mason Street School, La Casa de Bandini and La Casa de Estudillo.
Old Town is home to more than 100 shops and 24 restaurants. You can get some great Mexican food, of course, as well as other kinds of food. My personal favorite is Rockin’ Baja Lobster.
If you enjoy artesian products, Old Town is host to an artesian market every Saturday. It’s free to get in, and you can enjoy shopping for great products and enjoy live music.
If you like plays, you may also enjoy checking out the Theatre in Old Town. The theatre itself is not a historic building, but it was built to resemble an old barn. It’s small, seating only 250 people and is quite charming.
Try a tour and get a really good feel for the history of the area. The docents are very helpful.
A great place to get started is the Robinson-Rose House, which includes a model of how Old Town looked in 1872. After you’ve enjoyed a tour, get lunch at one of the restaurants or bring a picnic and eat outdoors.
Old Town is great for tourists and popular with locals. You’re sure to find something to suit your tastes.
