San Diego International Airport

The San Diego International Airport has been in operation for more than 75 years. It’s located near downtown San Diego. Like any major airport, it is quite busy, but things generally run fairly smoothly.

The biggest challenge San Diego’s airport faces is that it is a single runway airport. Many propositions have been floated to find a way to either expand or move the airport, but so far no acceptable solution has been found. A favored alternative, that of taking over Marine Corps Air Station Miramar has many problems, not the least of which is the fact that the military has no intention of leaving that property.

Most international flights from San Diego are to either Mexico or Canada.

Locally, the airport is called Lindbergh Field, for the pioneer of flight. There’s a mural of him as you drive up to the airport.

There’s the usual assortment of long and short term parking available, as well as a good variety of rental car agencies. If you’re picking someone up, there is a cell phone area where you can wait for them to call you to say that they are there.

As you take off from the San Diego International Airport, look out the window. You’ll see Sea World and the bay. The view as you take off is quite lovely.

The shopping within the airport is pretty good. You can find some nice souvenirs or get a bite to eat before your flight. Obviously, these days you need to pay attention to what you are allowed to take on the flight, and this can change over time.
