Windansea Beach

Windansea Beach is not your typical sandy beach. It’s also not one of those uncomfortable beaches with nothing but small rocks to walk on. The rocks here are big. Really big.

Don’t get me wrong. There’s sand on this beach. Plenty of it. But the sandstone rocks give it a truly unique appearance, unlike what you probably think of when you think of a sandy beach. And it’s beautiful.

Be prepared when you go to Windansea. There’s a distinct lack of restrooms. There are lifeguards in summer and sometimes on spring and fall weekends, as well as separate swimming and surfing areas.

Windansea is quite popular with surfers. The Windansea Surf Club has been around since the 1960s. The surf can be quite crowded due to its popularity. The best time for surfing is low to mid tide, as there can be a lot of backwash at high tide.

It’s not good for scuba diving. The surfing conditions are created by underwater reefs, but the water is too rough for good visibility.

Parking is a bit of a challenge, as there is only a very small lot and residential street parking available.

To reach Windansea, take the I-5 to La Jolla Village Drive going west. Take a left on Torrey Pines Rd, then right on Pearl. Go left at La Jolla Boulevard, and Windansea is off Nautilus.
